Israeli Occupation Forces arrest two schoolchildren from Aida camp

Israeli occupation forces on Tuesday, 23 January 2018, stormed Aida camp north of Bethlehem, where they arrested two Palestinian children at the entrance of Lajee Center.

The two children, identified as Mohammed Salah al-Massa'id (15), who has been arrested and detained before, and Mu'taz Badawneh (15). Both are members of the center.

Soldiers immediately took the children to the military camp at Rachel's Tomb area, then to the Ofer prison, where they will be sent to court hearing on Thursday.

Children in Aida camp are constantly subjected to illegal Israeli raids and arrests.

Since the second Intifada, Israeli occupation has been targeting Palestinian children in many violations including murder, detention, and denial of freedom of movement.

According to Defense for Children Intenrational (DCI), around 500-700 Palestinian children are arrested, detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system each year.

"Israel is the only country in the world that automatically prosecutes children in military courts that lack basic and fundamental fair trial guarantees. Since 2000, at least 8,000 Palestinian children have been arrested and prosecuted in an Israeli military detention system notorious for the systematic ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children."

Lajee Center strongly condemns such arrests of innocent children, and considers it a grave violation of human rights and children’s rights in specific.

Lajee calls on international organizations in Palestine to intervene to help protect Palestinian children from any violations, including violence, arrest or murder.

Lajee also calls on international community to stand in solidarity with the children until they are released and given all their rights, and have a normal life like other children.
